“The Consult is a service for producers, directors and other creatives to start and continue having conversations about how they uphold and address racism and colonialism within their practices.

Our aim is to be having these conversations that non-IBPOC producers/creatives are uncomfortable having, and to actively think about what we can do to conduct and implement safe spaces in an otherwise very colonial creative industry.”

Stone Motherless Cold

The Consult is service designed to centre the voices of people who are Indigenous, Bla(c)k and/or people of colour (IBPOC) in the conversation whilst equipping clients with the tools and knowledge for them to work towards creating safer and more inclusive environments, productions and attitudes for people who are IBPOC.

The Consult is a specialist consultancy service designed to guide arts organisations and individuals to the stress points in their operations where they may not be including IBPOC community members in their practices.

The People of Cabaret’s approach to The Consult is by centering and empowering IBPOC creatives to lead the way in shaping the industry, with the support and allyship of non-IBPOC industry professionals. This level of truth telling can often be exhausting for our communities and oftentimes it’s the code switching whilst navigating colonial systems that can be the most exhausting part, so we encourage community members to bring their full selves to these sessions and to not feel like they have to censor themselves.

One on one

Unpacking and discussing racism and the colony can be an overwhelming concept, but settlers all need to start somewhere. Sometimes all it takes is fostering a connection with someone in a safe environment to get the conversation going. We may not be able to dismantle the whole system in under an hour, but we can at least start understanding the often forgotten human perspective on these issues.
